Lot 308 1817 Liberty Head Large Cent
An early U.S. copper large cent featuring the Liberty Head or Matron Head design introduced in 1816. The obverse presents Liberty facing left, surrounded by 13 stars representing the original colonies, with a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the date 1817 below. The reverse displays ONE CENT centered within a laurel wreath, encircled by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Designed by Robert Scot and John Reich, this issue is part of the Coronet Head series that marked the transition to a more refined and classical portrait style in early American coinage.
